Biochemistry Summer School

The Natural Sciences Department of Akademeia High School is excited to offer this unique, one-week course in Biochemistry.

During this week you will awaken your senses, particularly your sense of smell, as you will extract essential oils from fruits, such as oranges, and plants, such as lavender. Essential oils have amazing scents and are found in soaps, cosmetics and have even found use in alternative medicines.

After working through the process of extracting these fascinating molecules from different organic materials, you will explore their uses by investigating their microbial properties and even making your own soap!

This week promises to increase your awareness of the world around you and will leave you with a set of new skills by working with a combination of biologists and chemists who each have something unique they wish to share.

Teachers

Dr Mark William Kelly
Senior Chemistry Teacher, Akademeia High School

After achieving his undergraduate degree Mark was offered a graduate job at Sasol Technologies Ltd where he was involved in the research of heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis. Mark left this position to complete a PhD in Bristol, where he specialised in gas phase plasma diagnostics and modelling for the chemical vapour deposition of diamond. During his PhD, Mark attended several conferences to present his work and is first author of two publications, as well as being second author of several others. Following a one-year post-doctoral research position in Bristol, Mark completed a PGCE to teach secondary science with a specialisation in Chemistry at the University of the West of England. Mark is moving to Warsaw having completed two years as Head of Chemistry at a British international school in Nairobi.

Dr Nataliya Marchyk
Chemistry Teacher, Akademeia High School

After achieving BSc from one of the best universities in Belarus, Nataliya followed master program on Chemistry from the Institute of Research Training combining it with the research work in the Institute of New Materials of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. Nataliya’s research interest was focused on preparation and analysis of polymer-based composite film as models of lipid bilayers. After that she moved to France to follow doctoral program in Compiègne University of Technology. Herein she worked in international team collaborating with the research group from University of Applied Sciences Jena (Germany) and the research group from University of Picardie Jules Verne (Amiens, France). Nataliya’s research interest was based on synthesis of molecularly imprinted polymers specific to a certain target molecule and their application in biomonitoring and diagnostics. From here comes her huge interest in interdisciplinary approach. She is fascinated how different disciplines can collaborate, e.g. chemistry-biology-physics-engineering-etc., to give answers on challenging questions and result in appearance of new technologies, approaches and strategies. Thus, she wants to show students that nowadays the science is multi- and interdisciplinary and relies on the whole spectrum of knowledge not limited by one particular subject. And that answers can be found everywhere.

Iga Wiśniowska
Biology Teacher, Akademeia Educational Group

Iga is currently finishing her master’s thesis in Biotechnology at the University of Warsaw. Microbiology is her forte and it is within this field she is conducting further experiments at the Department of Molecular Biology in the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics (IBB). Before continuing her academic journey in Warsaw, Iga earned her Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry at Imperial College London.
