“Dr Jonsson’s engaging lecture explored the intricate histories of 18th-century charlatans, their mysterious identities, and outlandish claims. From the self-corroborating network of charlatans to their stories of travels to China or Formosa (despite never leaving Europe), it was fascinating to hear how, even today, the 18th-century charlatans continue to trick and confuse scholars. I gained an insight into the frustrations and challenges historians face when dealing with primary sources, but also into the way in which history still remains unpredictable, confusing, and exciting.”
