"Nothing usual. About Wisława Szymborska"

“Nothing usual. About Wisława Szymborska”

Wisława Szymborska is widely known as an exceptional poet and the laureate of the 1996 Nobel Prize in Literature, yet her personal history yields much more than just exquisite poetry.

Join us for a special meeting with Michał Rusinek, former secretary to Wisława Szymborska and president of the Wisława Szymborska Foundation, who will introduce the audience to her multifaceted mind, generous heart and charming sense of humor.

Michał Rusinek was born in Kraków in 1972 and still lives there with his family. He was personal secretary to poet Wisława Szymborska and currently manages her Foundation. The author works at the Department of Polish Language at the Jagellonian University in Kraków, where he teaches Literary Theory and Rhetoric.

On certain days, he becomes a translator from English; on others he writes books for children and adults, or creates poetry or song lyrics. To date, he has written and translated around 100 books. Rusinek is also a celebrated columnist, having written many articles on books and language.

Vernissage

Over the years Wisława Szymborska made many postcards using collage, which she sent to her friends on various occasions.

Like her poetry, Szymborska’s collages have powerful punch-lines and are characterized by a surrealistic sense of humour.

The vernissage – a selection of several dozen collages, out of more than one thousand made by the poet – is particularly interesting as a kind of endnote to her literary oeuvre: the postcards allow an insight into Szymborska’s creative imagination, and also offer a rare opportunity to show her from a different, lesser known angle.

The poet’s collages will be displayed together with our students’ works, which are themselves inspired by her artistic creativity.

Charity auction

The lecture will be preceded by a silent charity auction, organized by the Foundation of Wisława Szymborska.

Miłość szczęśliwa (“True Love”) collection of poems, signed by the author

Miłość szczęśliwa (“True Love”) is the first collection available in Poland of Wisława Szymborska’s love poems. This subtle, yet fundamentally crucial example of the poet’s work, is based on careful observation, often bitter or ironic reflection, but also a belief in the power of emotion.  Miłość szczęśliwa explores various aspects of love: wrote Joanna Szczęsna about this collection in 2007.

This book is not currently available for sale, as it is out of print.

This copy bears the author’s signature.
