A few words about the book
Łukasz Grass about his book – a fictionalized biography of Jerzy Górski “Najlepszy. Gdy słabość staje się siłą” (“The Best. When Weakness Turns Into Strength”):
“I knew it had to be more than an ordinary biography. I wanted to shift the readers in time, to the world in which my character lived, to show the atmosphere, recreate the dialogues and situations he witnessed.
We visited places where Jurek would remind himself stories from the old times. He had tears in his eyes on numerous occasions, when – after forty years – he visited the same places: in an old kitchen, where he would boil poppy straw and produce heroine, in front of a dilapidated building, where, together with his friend Andrzej,he broke into a pharmacy for the first time to steal morphine, in front of a devastated ward of a psychiatric hospital in Lubiąż, where they attempted to treat him, in Brzeg Prison, where he was sentenced to two years of imprisonment, and, finally in Wrocław Monar centre, which saved his life.”
Najlepszy is a story about a total collapse and a splendid return, a true story of a man whose life is a proof that it is never too late to pursue your dreams – even when everything seems doom and gloom.
