Akademeia Preparatory Courses

Led by our own faculty staff, familiar both with the principles that underpin our approach to learning and the common challenges students come up against when they join Akademeia, the Preparatory Courses furnish participants with some of the key knowledge and academic skills necessary to embark on successful academic careers.

Our  courses are exclusively designed for all students considering applying to our school and represent the ideal opportunity to experience our outstanding teaching provision, and state of the art facilities, for the first time.

The second edition of courses this academic year is currently in progress.   If you are interested in future courses, please contact us at:  akademeia.prep.courses@akademeia.edu.pl

English for Academic Purposes

The English for Academic Purposes Course is an ideal way to experience Akademeia’s first-class approach to learning for the first time. This exclusively designed course is geared towards students between the ages of 12-15 considering applying to our school at both Fifth Form entry points.

Offered at two levels, depending on the existing language skills of each student, both syllabuses will prime participants though the same overriding dual focus: addressing the most common language mistakes we know hold students back when they come to our school, as well as equipping learners with the necessary skills and strategies to succeed in demanding educational contexts. Key elements of the English language, combining both structural and lexical focusses, will provide students with the foundations necessary to successfully complete many of the same assignments required of our term-time students, such as developing research skills, academic writing, presentation delivery and interacting with a variety of texts.

10 weeks, starting from 9 January to 10 February (5 weeks) and from 27 February to 29 March (5 weeks)  with a two- week break for winter holidays

Tuesdays and Thursdays 17.00-18.25 / 4 x 40 minutes per week

Minimum English language level required to participate – A2 level. Students will be grouped into two levels based on their current proficiency in English.

Mathematics

The Preparatory Mathematics Course is intended to provide a necessary foundation for success in an academic Mathematics pathway. Split into two age groups, the course is designed for participants currently attending Year 8 (grade 7 in the Polish and American systems) or Year 9, with a view to applying to Akademeia to Years 9 or 10 respectively.

The Year 10 entry course is aligned to meet iGCSE content standards and mathematical practices, with the Year 9 entry course also carefully adapted to the age and experience of its participants. Students will be provided with the opportunity to learn a variety of mathematical processes, including problem solving, communicating and mathematical reasoning. They will be taught how to make connections between the subject and its applications, become mathematically literate, and to appreciate and value mathematics while making informed decisions as contributors to wider society.

A good, strong foundation in these areas of mathematics is necessary for success in future mathematics courses and this course will help students further understand, appreciate and enjoy maths so they are in a prime position to both study at Akademeia and develop a life-long affinity with the subject.
